My 3 fave “friends” on Foursquare

My favorite “friends” on foursquare are the personally enriching ones that throw suggestions “my” way and as of now it happens to be the businesses/tvstations & savvy webdividuals who jumped on the Foursquare boat & sailed into awesome port.  Here they are so you can sail with them too:

Zagat:

You may know Zagat as the top of the notch rating system for dining all over the world or the snooty foodies network but either way I love when their opinion pops up with suggestions of places nearby after I check in out & about in Los Angeles.

Bravo:

Yes the Bravo network has taken to Foursquare & gives tidbits from different people on their shows…pretty damn personal & cool I think.  I particularly enjoy the Top Chef’s LA suggestions.  It looks like they cover LA & New York…and?  Definitely worth exploring.

Marc Jacobs:

This may be totally run by the hands of an intern but I truly have a feeling the suggestions are from the mouth & mind of Marc Jacobs since in the past he is a web savvy supporter.  I’ve found new LA gems around the corner from where I’m at or new details about the places I already go to.  OMG Marc & I like the same places!? *highschoolhandclaps*

On a big bag of whimsy and a bucket of sheer will I put together my first showcase down at SXSW 2007. The Peacock Lounge approached me late 2006 to throw a party at their lovely venue so I (literally) sat down and wrote a list of everyone I wanted on my dream showcase. EVERYONE I wanted said YES. What a dream. The lovely Sarah Cass documented it & we all lived it.  Here’s a few photos & the full gallery is over here

COMMENT

Runway2010

I decided to breeze thru a few names & highlights my favorites from this seasons runway.  Feel free to comment with other people I should check out there are so many names & I decided to go with a few off the cuff…

Louis Vuitton by Marc Jacobs

louisv

I heard that this season was a bit frumpy and I chose the two of the pieces here for the fact that you could see the models waistline and also the patterns. I love the soft pastels mixed with grays and rich textures. There are some great skirts in this collection as well…a 50′s 3/4 down the leg/circle skirt which is divine. However, it looked like a few of the models were swimming in these outfits. More of the Louis Vuitton collection

Miu Miu

Untitled-13
I love me a well done jacket.  Make it fitted, with side closure near the neck, ruffled shoulders, throw in a bow and you pretty much had me at hello. I love the large chunked out elements on the jacket/dress & even shoes. I’d love to get a closer picture of the shoes cause these larger jewel elements this season are totally floating my boat. I tend to be drawn towards pieces that would work with my body and these I feel especially would. I WANT these pants. I also would really like to feel the fabric…more from the show here.

Anna Suiannasui

I love me some color. And I love me some patterns. But a well executed outfit without an over the top try too hard “bohemian” is rare. Since I just tend to prefer to talk about what I want (and there were fewer looks from this season that I liked) the stockings in this collection are blowing my mind. I’m pretty excited for the future of tights as right now the stores seems to just be carrying a bit of a floral 90′s knockoff and I want them to get more creative. The above is just that. Also I really do want those two oufits. REALLY. WANT. Anna sui reminds me to get creative with combination so okay Anna I will do just that. Go see more from her collection…

chatroulettin nxt lvlin

So the other night I threw on a scarf & some sunglasses & went on Chatroulette.com .   To give a quick rundown to the uninitiated it’s a video/chat site where you’re randomly paired with strangers.  I honestly don’t suggest people with a weak internet heart go there but I have a pretty strong filter and of course, sunglasses and scarves to protect me.  Here’s a few people that I met (You can also head over to the flickr set where there’s more description & I’ll probably end up adding more)

Interview w/ Jasefrmoutrspace + SATURDAY The Chase vs BlackDisco @ The Mountain Bar

l_0ffbe781595546c28aaf5fe0d7d7861f

Last week I hit up DJ/Promoter Jasefrmoutrspace to ask him a few questions about his upcoming party on Saturday, futurejams & who does his always awesome flyers that I see around.  His interview is below…

How did Saturdays VS. party come about?

It started a month back after my trip to NY.  I was catching up with my friend Jacques Renault after seeing both him and Justin play.  After the party the three of us were talking about The Chase and Justin asked me when I was going to bring him out.  I’ve worked with Justin briefly before when I brought out Jacques.  In addition to NY, I’ve also seen Justin play in LA and have heard a few of his mixes, which I really like.  I thought that it would be great to have him play The Chase, and next thing you know, I’m back in LA planning the party.

So to make the party complete, since I had two rooms, I wanted to have Blackdisco host the upstairs.  I’m a big fan of the Blackdisco parties and I’ve been thinking of working with Kevin from Blackdisco for a while.  So I thought that this would be a good opportunity to work with some good friends and have a great party!

Who does the flyers/design for your nights?

One of my best friends, Jay.  He’s a talented graphic designer and artist, who heads up the art direction for The Chase flyers. Sometimes we brainstorm on ideas, and I can always trust that he will take my abstract concepts to another level.  He puts in a lot of time into the design of the flyers to give the people something fresh that you don’t always see these days.  Jay does all my graphics, he’s great to work with, and I love his artistic expression.

This party was a special edition with Blackdisco.  Kevin wanted to design the flyers, so we went with it, and the came out cool.

Any future parties you’re excited about?

I’m excited about all of them.  I get to bring my dj friends from around the world to play for me and share their music with everyone out there.

And since you asked, up next, I have Brennan Green coming out to play a private birthday party for myself that I’m really looking forward to.  Also, I’m excited to have the talented Woolfy play The Chase on July 4th, at The Mountain Bar.

Besides my monthly in Chinatown, I started a residency at the Avalon where I get the opportunity to feature some of my favorite djs.  I have Jacques Renault down for early August, and some other big names in the works for the end of summer that I won’t say too much about now.  There will be more info on my myspace page coming soon.

Interview w/ Zoë Street Howe Author of Typical Girls? The Story of the Slits

What was the spark that initiated this book?

I had always really loved punk and reggae, free and alternative music, and I was a music writer and DJ of a punky reggae / experimental radio show called the Pogo Sessions (now Paranoimia) so it was natural for me to fall in love with The Slits and want to write about them and push them wherever I could.

But specifically, it was when I heard their cover version of Marvin Gaye’s ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ that I became really interested in them and their process.

They’d been written off as crazy girl punks, which they were too of course, but there was much more to them than that, as artists and as people, and I wanted to learn more. I was amazed when I realised no one had written a book about them, so after a while, I decided it might actually be a mission for me! Luckily the rest of The Slits and their comrades agreed, and Ari in particular has often rightly said that The Slits have always been swept under the carpet, and this is an opportunity to hopefully change that in some way.

But I also feel that it’s vital to draw attention to this group and what they did not simply because they absolutely deserve this tribute, but also for the sake of not just women but artists who are going their own way – I found learning about them wholly inspiring and motivating, and I hope the book will serve to spread this effect to others.

My idea was to particularly celebrate ‘Cut’, their seminal 1979 album which was so important and still sounds timeless, witty, original and exciting, and the book, which comes out this summer, will coincide with the 30-year anniversary of the album’s release. It also coincides with their then label Island Records’ 50-year anniversary too! So this is an important year all round.
