scary resemblence to a faded me

just got back from the silent movie theater where i saw a preview of Le Voyage de Ballon Rouge or the Flight of the Red Balloon from the Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. juliette binoche was just incredible…and it made me want to visit france, not have children and get back into my puppetry.

here’s a song from that soundtrack that really stuck out:

Charles Aznavour || Emmenez-Moi

Here’s the lyrics, translated:

*******************************

Take Me Along

On the docks where the boredom
Of life is all that I own
I see boats coming in
With the fruits of places unknown

I watch as they come
From a world in the sun
That I see in my Mind

But then it’s farewell
To this cold northern hell
They can leave far behind

Let me go where they go
Let me fly the winds that they fly
For to stay in this place
Will destroy a man such as I

Take me along
A long way from here
Take me along to a faraway shore
When you are poor
It’s easy to bear
With sunshine and soft Summer air

At the end of the day
In a bar with sailors I stand
I talk about girls, about love
A glass in my hand

But then in my dreams
I can travel it seems
On a thought, Southern bound
And there I can hold
All the magic and gold
Of the love I have found

When the bars
On the keyside are closed
Alone I remain
I continue to dream
And each night
The dream is the same

Take me along
A long way from here
Take me along to a faraway shore
When you are poor
It’s easy to bear
With sunshine and soft Summer air

Very soon I will take any job
Or chance that I can
Though I dream like a child
For my dreams I’ll work like a man

Work and with pride
For my ticket to ride
Where the sun shines for me
Survive any storm
To be wild to be warm
That’s the way I must be

I’ll be leaving behind no regrets
And all of my past
And I’ll call to the sea
As I sail to freedom at last

Take me along
A long way from here
Take me along to a faraway shore
When you are poor
It’s easy to bear
With sunshine and soft Summer air

I just pulled out this album last night. Sugar Shack is one of my favorite songs and I really have no idea what else is on this album. Part of my radio listening during high school in New Jersey was tuning into WKXW 101.5 “Not New York, Not Philadelphia…PROUD to be New Jersey” and then comes the jingle NEW JERSEY ONE OH ONE POINT FIVE. Another one of my favorites from the station was The Hollies-Bus Stop…I found a funny Herman’s Hermits cover of the Bus Stop song on youtube and posted it below. You can listen to the Sugar Shack song here if you haven’t heard it. I think one of my favorite things from early TV broadcasts are bands being quite awkward in front of the camera and not knowing how to perform.
